The FSA finalized the “Ordinance for Enforcement of the Act on Utilization of Dormant Deposits to promote Public Interest Activities by the Private Sector,” where the Act is a legislation initiated by the members of the Diet. The Ordinance for Enforcement prescribes details on dormant deposits*.
 * Deposits in a bank account that have been inactive/inoperative for at least 10 years since the last recorded event are deemed as “dormant deposits.”

The FSA published “Statistics of NISA and Junior NISA Accounts (preliminary figures).” As of December 31, 2016, there were 10.7 million NISA accounts in total, and approximately 9.5 trillion yen (approximately 84.1 billion USD) was invested through the NISA accounts. In addition, 28.9 billion yen (approximately 256.5 million USD) was invested through 190 thousand Junior NISA accounts, which started from January 2016.
