Press Conference by Tatsuya Ito, Minister for Financial Services

(Excerpt)

October 21, 2005

Q.

A hidden camera was found at a UFJ Bank branch a few days ago. Although ATMs have become very convenient, I wonder if they also have become a breeding ground of crimes. Would you please give us your opinion on this point and also describe how the Financial Services Agency will deal with these crimes?

A.

In response to this incident, the FSA requested financial institutions to inspect their ATMs and their surrounding areas and report the results of their inspections to us. We also requested finance-related associations to gather information.

We hope that individual financial institutions implement measures to ensure that their customers are fully protected. We also hope that they will share information through the Japanese Bankers Association and other associations at the earliest possible opportunity and that the financial industry will collectively take proper action.

Q.

Some media reported today that an administrative action would be taken against Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance. Please comment on the FSA's plan.

A.

Regarding this case, we intend to study proper administrative response as called for based on the facts that were discovered through the recent on-site inspection and other facts that came to our attention in the report that was submitted in response to the findings of the inspection.
