Q.: Regional banks are continuing to get bigger through mergers, but as Minister of State for Financial Services, how do you view this?
A.: I think it’s probably a good thing. We’re seeing this trend with banks, particularly regional banks, located in regions with declining populations. Regional banks, second-tier regional banks, and regional credit unions are engaging in mergers of various forms in response to conditions in their respective regions. This puts them on a stronger footing, which I think also benefits the local economy, so I think it’s a good thing.
