[Opening remarks:]

Last week, from January 10 to 13, I visited Singapore and then Vietnam, where I exchanged views with a wide range of government officials and private-sector financial officials. I would like to take this opportunity to report on my visits.
In Singapore, I held roundtable meetings on financial services with Singapore-based investment professionals, entrepreneurs, and Japanese financial institutions. I also met with officials from the National University of Singapore, who are involved in financial education and the development of highly-skilled financial professionals, to exchange views on Singapore’s initiatives and the issues facing Japan.
I heard a wide range of thought-provoking opinions on the challenges of realizing Japan as an international financial center and on boosting the activities of Japanese companies and financial institutions in the region. I believe the trip was a very meaningful one.
